This is a guide for people who have never worked with energy or spirits before! This guide can be used for all energetic beings and creations though!
First, a bit of background knowledge: You can see spirits with both your physical and your astral eyes, but for now let’s focus on our astral eyes as it’s and easier starting point. You have two bodies: a physical and an astral. Your astral body is already wired to see spirits and the metaphysical world(s). Your physical is not. If you have never astral travel traveled or projected, then don’t worry, your bodies are inline! If you have, make sure that your bodies are back in line (or overlapping, merging, whatever you call it). Imagine how a TV works. There’s a camera and transmitter that sends the images across space to reach your TV. Astral sight kind of works in the same way! When you astral travel, the information being seen by your astral eyes is being sent back to your physical body. Between this connection there is static build up from your astral body not being used. The more you use your astral eyes, the more the images and energy straightens out the static and the clearer your vision becomes! So, how do you actually sense entities? Start with energy work. I recommend meditation, but you don’t have to be meditating to do it. If you want to meditate but have trouble focusing or sitting still, here is a tumblr good post about dealing with that! When you do whatever you are doing to start practicing, feel the energy move through your body. How does it move? What does it look like? Does it have any other senses? How does it interact with your environment? Move your focus outward of your body. What is the energy of your room? How does it change when someone else is in the room? How does it feel before and after you’ve cleansed it? Do experiments like this to teach yourself how to sense changes! Also try moving around as you stay in this state of attention and mind. Try opening your eyes, or closing them! Try doing it in different ways so that you can start sensing energy at any time! This may take several sessions to get the hang of, and always feel free to check with divination after or during to see if you are sensing things right. Don’t be discouraged if you think you are making things up! If you think you are making shit up, just go with it! Trust your gut and what your senses are telling you! If you find out you were wrong, then at least you know that the next time you try! Don’t fear failure, you can only get better! Once you feel ready, introduce the entity to your room. Ask them to sit still. Get into your energetically minded state and play hide and seek! Try to sense their energy and then check with divination to find out if you were right or not! Do this multiple times. Sometimes, energy changes enough physically, especially if you are looking for it. Most entities emite enough energy for you to try this method! If you can’t find them using energy, start waving your arms around! The entities’ energy may feel cool on your skin, or warm, or electric, or anything at all! so if you are gently swaying your arms around and hit a patch of air that feels…different, see if that’s them! Keep trying games like this! Just try to sense the spirit! Eventually, you can start to sense or feel the move around when you aren’t actively paying attention. That can grow until you can almost physically feel them in your arms! Maybe it’ll be just a few days or maybe it’ll take a few years, but if you work on it you’ll get there. The more you use these skills, the more they’ll become exact.

When writing any application, the amount of effort you put into your application is incredibly important. Some parts are even more important when applying for an RA/CC! So this post will show you what us here at Lorelei’s are specifically looking for, however this can work for a reference to any RA/CC or application that you could apply for at any shop!
Getting a regular adoption? Look HERE! RA SPECIFIC THINGS If you just want a CC, skip down just a lil bit. Species, personality traits, skill sets, etc that you CAN NOT work with due to triggers or another good reason For an RA, you are applying for ANY SPIRIT AT ALL out there in all of the astral. This section is to make sure that this spirit will not trigger you. For myself, Mod Fox, specifically, I would ask for no spider spirits as spiders will throw me into a panic attack. Or no vampires since their energy makes me physically ill. Another thing that would be acceptable would be “no sexual spirits”. Lots of other things are acceptable, but that is most common. Other things that would work would be “my spirit companion has X trigger”. Your families triggers and worries are just as valid as your own! Things that wouldn’t qualify would be things like “ Bird spirits because I already have 5 bird spirits and want something different ” Or “ please do not conjure a dark aligned spirit because i’m a lightworker. ” Getting an RA means that you have 0 preferences to who is conjuered. There are no guarantees. One more bird spirit won’t hurt you. Light and darkworkers can get along. Companionship is friendship first and foremost for most anyway. If it really matters to you, get a CC! Just as a side note, but most shops will NOT adopt out spirits who are abusive, or racist or something. They do not pass vetting, so while you may want to mention it just incase, it’s not something to be overly worried about! CC SPECIFIC THINGS To continue to the rest of the application, skip this part! Here we ask for your preferences for the spirit you are adoption. Species, personality traits, and skill set are asked. I don’t have much to say as we have yet to encounter any problems. It seems pretty straight forward. Just please note, if you ask for 18000 things, you may not get all of them. There’s so small that there’s a chance that spirit will have so many things that you want and then also be interested in companionship. APPLIES TO BOTH APPLICATIONS Please provide a second mode of communication other than tumblr in case we need to reach you PLEASE!! Do this. If something goes wrong and we cannot reach you, then things will only go more south. We reach out at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and every year to check and see how well adoption is going, and we need to be able to reach you if you deactivate your tumblr, change URLS, or anything else of the sort. Emails work best, but any other social media that does not change easily, like twitter. Please don’t use discord because you can be 1 click away from changing your numbers and the word in your name. Do not give us your phone number. Even though I consider us trustworthy, and YOU may trust us, we are still strangers over the internet. Unless you know a mod in person, just don’t. A description of your home life/lifestyle Here you should write about your day to day life. If you’re in school write about the classes that you take. Do you have a roommate? What are they like? If you live at home, write about your family, your pets. Write about what you do in your free time. What do you do when you’re bored, when you have free time. When you go out where do you go. Do you have a job? What’s work like? If you already have companions/do spirit work, how does that fit into your life? How does religion fit into your life? There should be 2-3 paragraphs here so that we can find the perfect companion for you! A description of yourself(personality more than appearance). This appears to be the hardest part of an application. What do you write about yourself? I always start with overviews. Your zodiac signs, your hogwarts house, etc. But say more than, “I’m a leo.” How do you relate to being a leo? For example, I may say something like, “I’m a gemini through and through; I’m a very social person who loves communication. However, I really shine through with my capricorn moon when it comes to my emotions.” Elaborate. Then build off of that. What are your hobbies? What do you like doing? When you hang out with friends what do you do? Don’t forget to write about negative aspects about you. Mention them in passing and how they may affect your life, but then continue on. It’s important information, but you are selling yourself even if this is not a regular adoption. If you only talk about how horrible you are, and such, why should this spirit choose you? It’s okay to say “I think negatively of myself and think I have no redeeming qualities, but sometimes I art okay.” There should be 3-5 paragraphs about you, depending on length. Do you know how to astral travel or project? Do you know how to ward? Do you have any wards set up? Level of Experience? Are you a minor? These questions aren’t so much for you to write lots about, it’s more to, again, find the best spirit to fit your needs. For warding, you do need wards in order to adopt from this shop. We have a few resources in our FAQ about warding if you need them! Information on current companions that you have/ones that you have had before. (Please make sure to ask them if they’re okay with another spirit being added to the family) First, do not apply at all if a spirit currently in your family is uncomfortable with adding to your family. Do not keep this from your current family. Just don’t. But when filling this section out, talk about more than “this is X, he’s a griffin.” You should write 1-2 paragraphs about them. If you can’t write that much about them, then maybe get to know them a little better before applying for another companion. Only include information they’re comfortable with, but if you’re at a loss for what to write, refer to the information you wrote down about yourself! If you have a large family, you need 1-2 paragraphs about every single member. Even if it turns a 2 page application into a 20 page application. The personality of your companions is just as important as you. Do you have an app at another shop? PLEASE Let us know this as well. Include regular adoptions, and ra/cc. It’s important. Not only is it against our rules to apply for an RA/CC if you have an application somewhere else (or with us), it’s also incredibly rude. If you do not tell us, and we find out, then we will have a talk that may not be entirely pleasant. If it’s not against the rules at other shops, it’s important for them to know. Letting them know won’t nullify your application. They will probably reach out to the shop about what to do, if you are chosen. They will talk things over to make sure things are best for the spirit and you. FINAL NOTES So that’s the app! But there are a few more things to know about getting an RA/CC that many people do not know. When adopting via regular adoption, people are drawn to spirits primarily due to callings. However, the point of a calling is to get your attention, to let you know that you two might be a good match, and to hopefully get you to apply. When you file for an RA/CC the spirit already has your attention. You already applied for them when you asked for an RA/CC. You may not experience a calling. Most of the time, you won’t. So if you don’t feel called to the spirit in the RA/CC don’t panic! At most shops you can turn down a spirit and ask for the conjurer to reconjure for you. Here are Lorelei’s your conjurer will conjure 3 times before sending you to another conjurer to see if they can help you out better. PLEASE do not be an ass and turn down multiple conjurings just because the spirit isn’t what you had in mind. If you bought a CC and something really important to you was left out, that’s ok, but then mention it to the conjurer so they know. If you bought an RA, the only reason you should be turning down a spirit is if there’s something about them that really wouldn’t fit into your lifestyle. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask us!! Best of luck!! When adopting from a spirit shop, be it paid, or free, or RA/CC or regular adoption, your application is incredibly important. This isn’t a writing competition, and your application is not the reason you weren’t chosen most of the time. We look at how well the spirit and you will get along. Too little information, or the wrong information, may result in your application being rejected.
So how do you write a good application? Here is an example of a good application using our application guidelines, but these ideas can be transferred to any app at any shop. Getting an RA/CC? Look Here! What makes you feel drawn to them? You don’t need a calling to apply to a spirit, but what about this spirit makes you want to apply? It’s perfectly okay to say something like, “I thought their species was really cool, and as I continued to read about them, I fell in love with their personality.” And then elaborate on their personality. Something like, “When I read about them, every word seems to pull on my heart, and I can’t stop thinking about them.” . We expect one paragraph here, usually 5-7 sentences. What is not acceptable is saying, “They seem super happy which will help my depression.” Or anything else along those lines. Unless it’s stated in their bio that they would like a companion so that they can help with something like this, then this isn’t an acceptable reason to apply. Spirits are usually looking for family and friend before all else. Spirits won’t heal you of depression or any other physical or mental illness and this shouldn’t be the end goal of companionship. Why do you think you will be a good companion? Here we look for 1-2 paragraphs about why you could be a good companion. This has nothing to do with skill. This is “I have worked with spirits for sometime and can say with confidence that I will be able to communicate with you whenever.” Or “I’m new to spirit work, but I will do by best to astral travel and communicate with you.” Describe what you will do to not neglect your companion. It’s perfectly alright to say something like, “I don’t know how I will be a good companion, but I promise I’ll give my all in all I can.” Level of experience (how many years/months?) Here, even though we ask for a time frame, we want more. We would like at least 1 paragraph about your experience. If you just got started, what have you researched? What have you done? If you learned about spirit work yesterday, let us know that too! We might reach out to you with references on how to get started and things to know before companionship, but your application will still be valid. If you’ve been doing spirit work for a long time, tell us what you’ve done! Can you travel, can you project? Do you regularly work with a species? Do you do any research? What do you do? A description of yourself(personality more than appearance) Any interesting things that may render the spirit uncomfortable? This appears to be the hardest part of an application. What do you write about yourself? I always start with overviews. Your zodiac signs, your Myers–Briggs Type Indicator, etc. Mention bad things about yourself, if you might have anger issues or something, but don't dwell on them. Mention them in passing and how they may affect your life, but then continue on. It’s important information, you are selling yourself. If you only talk about how horrible you are, and such, why should this spirit choose you? It’s okay to say “I think negatively of myself and think I have no redeeming qualities, but sometimes I art okay.” There should be 3-5 paragraphs about you, depending on length. The personality of your companions is just as important as you. Do you know how to astral travel? Do you have wards set up? If you already talked about these two things, it’s okay to say “Yes and yes.” However if you haven’t already elaborated, then talk about what you do in the astral! Where do you go? What do you do? What wards do you have? How many? What do they do? We don’t need specifics, but saying “anti-malicious spirit” and “offensive wards for attackers” is enough. Any other information about yourself that you deem fit This one seems pretty self explanatory and is a hundred percent optional. Write about whatever you want to include but haven’t written about yet. Please provide a second mode of communication other than tumblr in case we need to reach you PLEASE!! Do this. If something goes wrong and we cannot reach you, then things will only go more south. We reach out to check and see how well adoption is going, and we need to be able to reach you if you deactivate your tumblr, change URLS, or anything else of the sort. If you apply for a spirit after you apply for one with us, then you need to let us know. You can update your application at any time! Just shoot us an ask, or an email to let us know what needs to be changed! Final notes Your entire application should be AT THE VERY LEAST 2 google doc pages long. Single spaced, Times New Roman. We want to know as much as you’re willing to give! While spelling should be important, don’t worry about it! Don’t worry about being professional. You’re trying to portray who YOU are. We all but require longer applications because the mods and the spirits put in tons of work for them to be posted. Vetting is a minimum of 3 months, and yet spirits are often vetted much much longer as you can see by the date on the bottom of their bios. Vetting is intense and takes a lot of time, both for the mod and the spirit. We hire artists to make art for the spirits and spend hours writing biographies that catch the interest of readers. Writing a short, bad, app can take 5 minutes. When there is 1 sentence per question, it feels like disrespect. Our spirits spent years for them to find a companion, and you can't even be bothered to write a single paragraph, let alone a full and complete application. If you truly have nothing to say about a topic, that's alright! But your personality and care and dedication to wanting to adopt this spirit should shine through in the rest of your application. If you get rejected the first time, it's okay! Take as many tries as it takes you to get accepted! It just shows through action how determined you are, which we truly admire! Please keep in mind, though, that you can still be chosen with a shorter app! It’s about how well you two may click, not length! It’s not a writing assignment. This is just a help and starting point! And I understand that I only filled this out to terms with Lorelei’s guidelines, but just use the tips given here to fill out any application! Applicable to any spirit shop, free or paid.
So you’ve just been chosen by your first companion! Congratulations! So, what now? Adoption Well, let’s start from the moment you get the message saying you’re the lucky one. Vessels For paid shops that provide vessels, you may have a message or two to respond to, but you do not have to worry about vessels. However, for free shops, that is something to consider. After getting the message asking if you are still interested in the spirit and you say yes, the next message should be about vessels. If the spirit you applied for has their vessel preference on their bio, it would be smart to gather possible vessels now. If it is not listed, ask what the spirit may like, and while you wait for a response, gather some items that you think may interest the spirit. Talk with your conjurer to insure you have a vessel that best suits your needs and what the spirit would like. Getting Ready The conjurer should ask you when you are ready for the binding or for the spirit to be sent over. Before you say you are ready, run through a mental checklist. Are you home? Do you have everything you need? The conjurer should provide you with offerings, manifestations, their name and other information after the binding, but you can always ask for offerings before hand to make sure you’re ready. You do not need offerings right off the bat, so do not worry if you don’t have any. If you are the type to want an alter, do you have it ready? If the spirit needs an astral space or something, do you have it all ready? Don’t just say yes you’re reading for the binding because you’re eager. Take 5 minutes to make sure everything is ready. Maybe do a quick cleanse and clean up a little physically. Bindings When you say you are ready for the binding, the conjurer may or may not need a photo. If they say no photo is required, make sure you make it clear what you would like bound. If you say rose quartz, but have 5 chunks of rose quartz, things can get tricky. Without a photo, conjurers can bind by using your intent and using it like a mirror to reflect the binding onto the object. Both are equally strong if done by someone experienced. A good binding will never restrain or harm the spirit. It will simply amplify senses allowing for easier communication, and stronger manifestations and will let the spirit always be able to find the vessel. Some shops will also include things like “if binding is broken, return spirit to conjurer immediately” or “if spirit is hurt, return spirit to conjurer immediately” to insure spirit safety. As long as you are a good person though, you won’t need to worry about what else a trustworthy binding has. If you would like to change vessels simply talk to your conjurer! Other Information After the spirit has been bound, the conjurer should send you more information about the spirit. This includes their name, preferred offerings, manifestations, and any other information deemed fit. You typically won’t get a large amount, just the stuff that wasn’t public. Please remember to use a nickname for your companion unless given permission to share it! Sharing a spirit's real name can lead to some bad stuff in some cases, but not all. But don't take that risk and share a name without permission! Give the spirit 5-10 minutes for them to arrive (or the shipping time if the vessel was shipped) and then the adoption process is done! If you are unsure if the spirit as arrived, ask your conjurer, they should be able to help. Companionship Protection So, now that you have your very first spirit companion!! What do you do? First you’re going to want to sit down (or walk around) and talk with your companion. Using a pendulum, tarot deck, ouija board, or any other physical means of divination, or if you already have spirit experience, telepathy or just talking in the astral, you’re going to want to talk with your companion. It’s alright to first talk about things like how the trip was, maybe show them around your house, introduce them to your pets or family members or just do whatever! However, you’re going to want to set some ground rules, or as they’re called, House Rules. House rules are rules that a spirit will follow while in your space. Rules could include anything from “don’t touch my computer” to “don’t manifest as X” to anything you deem fit. Some conjurors/shops may have their own set of house rules, so be sure that you ask the person you met the spirit through to find out if there are already rules in place just in case you want to change any of them. These rules should be followed and make it clear that there will be consequences for any being broken. Consequences could be a stern talking to, or not carrying a vessel around for a day, or for major offenses, asking them to leave for a few days. It is never okay to hit or abuse your companion. Make sure to sit down and talk with your companion about these rules. Make sure that you both understand what each one means, and if there are exceptions. Answer any questions they may have and make sure you both agree to them. I would also like to say that most companions should have been vetted for the basics. No attacking anyone etc. While I cannot speak for all spirits, they should have a good idea of what is and isn’t acceptable in the majority of households. Bonding Bonding with spirits can be just how you would bond with physical friends. Grab a divination device (like a pendulum) if you can’t easily communicate with spirit and just sit down and talk. Talk about your day, or about a book you’re reading, or anything. For pendulum users, ask questions like “Isn’t that crazy?” or “do you understand what seminar is?” to make it less one sided and also fill in some blanks for the spirit. Bonding could also just be watching a movie together, or reading a book (aloud or with the spirit looking over your shoulder), or just going for a walk and enjoying silence and nature together (or not silence, up to you and your skill/availability) Or! If you’re talented or have a talented friend, you could do things like going roller skating together. You (or a friend) can create custom rollerblades for the spirit (depending on species, this may or may not be the best idea) and just zoom around in the astral. Another way to bond would be to astral travel. Go into the astral and build a home together. Or just explore! Meet others! Find really awesome places! Discover new games and try those. Visit thousands of different planes. But, just as much as you share about yourself and your activities, ask your companion if they have anything they’d like to do! Do they have games from their childhood they’d like to play? Do they have any traditions they’d like to share? Don’t push if they don’t want to talk about it, but be sure that not everything you two do is based around you and not your friend as well! Offerings The way offerings work varies from person to person. Your conjurer should have given you a list of possible offerings, and some find they like to give offerings weekly, or following the moon phases. Or they do it whenever they have the items to offer. Talk to your companion to see what works best for the both of you. If your offering is a food, ask your companion if it’s okay for you to eat it afterward. Some will say sure, some will say just leave it out for as long as possible first, or toss it, etc. Make sure what they would like you to do with the offering first. It’s perfectly okay to ask if they even want offerings. For many companions, they don’t even do offerings. Or some companions will love the idea and give you offerings back!! It’s just important to talk to your companions about what works best for the both of you! Day to Day Life Spirits aren’t going to be at your side 24/7. Most have their own lives to attend to, although there are some who will try to be by your side all the time. They do respect your privacy and shouldn’t just follow you into a bathroom or watch you while you change. Many companions will set up a schedule. Maybe every other day you two will spend all day together. Or Monday is the day that you two will spend together. This is especially helpful when/if your family grows. Monday for one spirit, Tuesday for the next and so on and so forth. Schedules don’t work for everyone, and many families just have open doors, basically. Spirits will come and go as they want. Of course, companions will almost always be there for you when you call, or if you make plans to do something. This can be nice for larger families too, so that you get a more constant flow of spirits visiting and get to see everyone in a day, or over a few days, no matter how large the family is. Above all it’s important to talk to your friend about what works best for the both of you. Just like in any other relationship, communication is always key! Feedback If at any point in time you have problems with your companion, need a vessel replaced, or just need something confirmed/denied, please do not hesitate to ask your conjurer for assistance! Even after the spirit has been adopted (even if it’s 2 days, weeks, months, years, even decades later) it’s the shop owners responsibility to make sure both companions are happy. If a shop owner ever brushes you off, please talk to another member of the shop, or go to another shop entirely. A good shop owner should do all they can in order to help you, even if the spirit didn’t come from their shop. After a few weeks of getting to know your new companion and adjusting to your life, please leave a review for the shop! Not only will this let shop owners know what needs to be improved and what you enjoyed, it also helps other spirits from the shop find their homes! But yes, reviews are hard to write. Here are somethings to think about: Did the conjurer respond within a reasonable amount of time? Did they answer every question? Did they brush you off? Were they rude? Did you generally enjoy the service? Did you receive the spirit that you applied for? Are they a joy to be around? What do you two like to do together? Share your experiences (as much as you’re both comfortable with)! Do you have any last comments or concerns for the shop? Please feel free to share any stories or experiences you have with your companion with the shop, no matter how long it’s been since you’ve adopted. The knowledge of these two subjects are imperative to have in order to keep both you and your companion safe, as well as 100% needed to apply for any spirit at Lorelei's. When you get started in spirit work you are walking out into a rainstorm and wards are your umbrella, your jacket, maybe even the car you drive in to stay dry and safe.
Physical Wards Physical wards include salt or any protective crystal or sigil. It could be hopping in a circle in your room while humming a song. Whatever you physically do to make yourself feel safe is a physical ward. Salt, sage, jasper, smoke, hopping around and wearing your blanket as a cape are all physical wards. There are hundreds of tips out there that are for discreet witches. Sigils are easy to hide. Use an oil diffuser with essential oils that correspond with protection. Light candles with corresponding intent. Plants are inconspicuous. So is salt. Carry a salt packet in my phone case. Of course anything helps. Even that old bracelet you found who knows how long ago that just seems to hum protective energy is a physical ward! Metaphysical Wards Metaphysical wards are wards made of energy. They are set up using your own energy or energy that is borrowed with consent. You do not need to astral travel to set up wards. Visualization is your friend. Here are two simple methods: 1. Look at your physical room (or wherever you want to set up a ward). Follow the lines of where each wall meets another and visualize white light trailing in the wake of your vision. Follow the lines of one wall first, and once you make a square with your white light (or whatever shape your wall is), visualize the square being colored or filled in with your wards of choice. Continue this procedure until all of the walls, floor, and ceiling is warded. Then, expand your wards out to the rest of your house to keep every room and everyone inside safe. Use your intent to make sure it is impenetrable. 2. Get into a meditative state and feel your own energy. Pull it up into your hands and imagine your energy jumping from hand to hand. Turn this stream into a ball and simply add energy into this ball until it's the size of your room or space. This can take a while depending on the size of the space you want to ward. While increasing size think what you want this ball of energy to do. "Keep out malicious spirits" or "filter negative energy into positive energy" are two starting points. Important Notes: Don’t forget that it’s also good to ward your own person! You don’t want to be exposed to danger just because you went to work, or otherwise left your wards! I would also put extra wards on things you don’t want others to touch. I ward my companion’s vessels, my laptop and phone, as well as anything else I would like to make sure stays untouched. One last tip is to make sure you cover all of your bases. Make sure there’s not a random wall or other gap that isn’t warded. Make sure there’s no loophole that an awful spirit could get in through. To test wards, you may want to have an experienced friend or person look at them. You could also ram yourself at your own wards to see if they keep out what they are supposed to, but having a second opinion is always great when it comes to protection, especially if you are just starting. The upkeep of wards is important too. Make sure to check for cracks or breaks in wards, and to add more energy as time goes on. Physical wards, such as crystals, need to be cleansed regularly. I suggest doing a thorough check of all wards at least once every two weeks, but once a week would be best when you’re just starting. Ward types There are seven main types of wards. Notice wards, Offensive wards, Defensive wards, Monitoring and Safety wards, Comfort wards, Variance wards, and Ward Fillers. Notice Wards Notice wards are wards that leave a message for others. They don’t stop spirits from passing though but give them information. Either the information can be energetically told to them as they pass through, no reading or language knowing required. Or the ward can act more as a sign post that they have the option to read. Uses:
Defensive Wards Wards whose purpose is to defend you or your space. Usually takes large amounts of energy to make and upkeep. Can be envisioned in many ways depending on your opinions of “safety”. Walls of iron or stone, impenetrable vines, smoke or fog are just a few examples of what you could base your wards on. Uses:
Offensive Wards Wards that attack those who cross a line. While defensive wards can keep spirits from entering, what is the point if after some time the spirit can just destroy the defensive ward? Offensive wards keep spirits from reaching that part. Can look and act a variety of ways much like defensive wards. It is recommended to have many different types. If you have one offensive ward that sets the malicious spirit on fire but a malicious spirit is fire then the ward is next to useless. It is best to have different wards for different types of spirits Uses:
Monitoring and Safety Wards (sometimes called Door Wards) These wards are typically what you think of when you think of wards (aside from maybe defensive wards). They act if something happens. If you have anti-deception or anti-lying wards, then these wards will do something about it when something happens. One may think that these are ward fillers (discussed later) but these wards do not fill up the area. These wards only pay attention to what is happening inside of the ward area. If something happens, they stretch out their own energy to interact with the rule violating spirit and do as directed. Uses:
Comfort Wards (sometimes called Energy Altering Wards) This type of ward’s job is to keep life inside of the wards easier and more comfortable. These can be very intricate depending on what type of ward you want to make. These types of wards can also be used for many other uses if you get creative with it. Uses:
Variance Wards Variance wards themselves are not wards, but rather are wards that affect other wards. They are wards that allow for a grey area between black and white. When making a ward, it can be really easy to say “if malicious, teleport out immediately”, but whose definition of malicious are you using? Malicious means to do harm, but do you mean harmful to you? To anyone within your wards? What if the spirit means to do harm but not to you or anyone else, they are simply a carnivore wanting a meal? Is deadheading a plant enough to kick your own self out as you are doing harm to the plant? For another strong example is lying. If you have a no-lying ward on it’s own it may kick out anyone who told a made up story, or exaggerated the smallest detail, or is just trying to be sarcastic/funny (i.e. “no my names not fox, why would you think that? honestly, so cruel to forget my own name smh smh”). So whenever the anti-lying ward kicks up, it has to run through a series of checks (variance wards) before it can do anything. “Is the intention to deceive and harm others? Is the lie about something life threatening? Is the lie a story? Does everyone else in the room know that this is a lie?” You can see how working in pure black and white isn’t the best option. Spirits act differently and have different morals that humans and other spirits, and that’s important to consider when making wards. When making a variance ward, you yourself need to answer all of these questions and provide the ward enough information about your desires that in situations it can make informed and accurate decisions. You should also make sure to always make sure that you can overrule every decision that the ward makes incase of mistakes. Uses:
Ward Fillers Though this is at the bottom of the list, ward fillers are arguably one of the most important types of wards. I mention it last because ward fillers can be a subcategory of every other type of ward. Until this point, most wards have been activated when a spirit reaches them as though to pass. But what good are your wards if the spirit is already inside? Or can just teleport in? Ward fillers are wards that fill the space inbetween your wards. They make it so that once within the bounds of your wards, they are still held responsible for their actions and can be kicked out if needed. There can be defensive, offensive, Uses:
